Katie

Lydia is a second year university student. She plays hockey and is a keen user of social media. She says that her ‘mission’ is to educate the public about Type 1 diabetes. Ethnic background: English.

Sarah

Performing artist. Shares a house with a friend. Her advice to other young people who are not doing their insulin injections is to find the courage and to seek help as soon as possible.

Sophie

Sophie works full time as an accountant and is also studying to get a higher qualification. She is in a relationship. Ethnic background: English.

Interview 01

Student; lives away from home; practices several sports including surfing and has travelled a few times to far away places. Says that she does not let diabetes affect her life and that she has carried on as she would have done anyway.

She just finished an IT course. Lives with her mother. Her diabetes was diagnosed around Christmas time when she was constantly drinking water and also started vomiting. Ethnicity: African-British

She lives at home with her parents and siblings. She is studying to be a nurse care assistant. She has a lot of experience with managing diabetes while travelling/living abroad.

Full-time student; in a long-term relationship, until recently living in student accommodation but is moving back with her parents and will commute to university.

University student; has a boyfriend; living in shared student accommodation with three other friends.

Interview 14

University educated; engaged; she is one of five children, lives at home with parents and siblings. Unemployed and is applying to the Prince's Fund to start her business as a photographer.

Interview 21

Student of modern languages; lives in shared home. As a university student living away from home she is fully responsible for the everyday management of her diabetes. Says that more information about managing diabetes while travelling/or abroad is needed.

Interview 23

She studied engineering at university and works as an accountant; shares a house with two friends from university. She is a rugby player & currently trains three days a week after work. It used to be 6 days a week when she was at university.

Interview 27

Journalist; shares a house with other young people. Says that when first diagnosed she had no idea what diabetes was all about and that she had loads of questions but no one to answer them.

Interview 29

First year university student. During term time lives in student accommodation but often at weekends goes back home to see her parents and brother. She is enjoying her student life and independence.

Interview 30

Second year university student; has a boyfriend; lives in university halls. Has done voluntary work for Diabetes UK. Says that you musn't allow diabetes to take control of your life.
